I would skip it after reading that first sentence -- so I'd suggest either changing the genre (if it is more focused on the romance and cute snarkiness of the narrator) or changing the cover and description to better reflect SF if that's the main focus.Graysonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02427975121533708983noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142930702674170471.post-90026749727788987332011-08-07T09:08:42.508-07:002011-08-07T09:08:42.508-07:00Thanks, you guys, for looking at this for me! A story about a school field trip (albeit in the future) also sounds like the start of a children's book. However the teacher seems to be the main character, whereas in a children's book you'd expect one of the kids to be.anarchisthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05546197561922726279noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142930702674170471.post-88837029014995093042011-08-05T22:23:41.672-07:002011-08-05T22:23:41.672-07:00Agree with the other comments about the cover. It looks like a children's story from the cover, but it's classed as 'Light SF' but I just don't get that from the picture.Shaunhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17951707293674263179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142930702674170471.post-44363301228386627932011-08-05T17:58:35.430-07:002011-08-05T17:58:35.430-07:00I agree with the above posters. Are you marketing it for kids, or for adults with kids?

I don't hate the cover at all, by the way, but I agree that it would serve best as the cover of a middle grade book.S. This line in the blurb made me think that as well.

A futuristic comedy of (little) terrors

Is this story about the children and their adventures in the space museum or is it about the teacher and the guide? I think that needs to be made clear in the blurb. If you do that, I think the blurb will practically shorten and tighten itself.

I enjoyed the first 300 words and will at least sample this one.Margarethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04832055618604176686noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5142930702674170471.post-89548150902456791952011-08-05T16:09:08.592-07:002011-08-05T16:09:08.592-07:00I agree on changing the description to novelette. ...I agree on changing the description to novelette. It's well within the SF&FA definition for one and may make it more appealing. I also agree that the cover looks very much like a MG piece. There really is a disconnect between that and the blurb. I agree that the first 300 words doesn't do anything. Nothing happens and you don't even get to know the protagonist. I'd at least consider cutting them to get into the story more quickly. Of course, it's hard to be sure without knowing what happens next but neither the first 300 nor the blurb particularly hook me.J. R.
